Activities of ISDI 2023

January 01

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2023...
February 28 Center of Hope ISDI introduces a new program: Social Club it is an activity which must include every student in CoH.
For the whole of this year it will be organizing birthday celebrations of every student in every month.
We make it as real as a professional event organizer organizing a great event.

It involves the A-Z preparation to the actual work on D-day...and enjoying the celebration.
We devide the job description to different classeses depending on their abilities.
Naturally there is an appointed PIC =Person In Charge..and an MC= Master of Ceremony..and all will be done by students.
Each preparation takes a week to do from scratch and it is done with gusto and happiness and fun..because it involves hip hop dancing to the birthday tune..

For the week the situation in school is one of chaos, hectic, fun and happy.
All the skills learnt from years back paid off now.
March 17 Freedom!!! freedom!!!..was the feeling of eletion during our double celebration for both The World Down Syndrome Day March 21st dan YSDI's 24th Anniversarry which will coincide this year with Iedul Fitri..the biggest Muslim celebration after 30 days of fasting to purify the souls.

The choice taken was The Chevilly Resort at Ciawi, Bogor, West Java...a two hour drive by bus into the mountains. And the word mountain is indication of nature's beauty and fresh air. Chevilly Resort did not disapppoint.

The event was a combination of some formal and leisure agenda..of course we need to hear what our Chair persons had to say..afterall we have not been seen and gathered together since March 2020 due to covid.

We introduced and welcomed Ibu Ira McClendon to join YSDI as our communicator. She delivered the Founder and Commisioner of YSDI's speech due to her absence of suffering from a recent heart attack.
After the formal yet leisured agenda...let loose was the birthday bash with song singing and the birthday dance that we adopted, choreographed and trained and practised.

Lunch was served and the the games began...then free time which we all enjoyed by sightseeing and taking photos and just enjoyed the day... and enjoyed our newly reunion. Happy to be healthy and blessed and together again.
March 18 The month of March is utmost important for all people born with Down syndrome..including Indonesia.

Many small and big organizations and varius groups were eager to show their support by staging many and various activities which were just amazing and showed just how far we have come from the "dark ages" of such burden of negative stigma to being appreciated and accepted and now a bit idolized.
On this date ISDI 's karateka Dojo 37 ISDI INKAI participated in Down Syndrome Festival Talent Competition organized by the group KPDS..another group focussed on people born with Down syndrome.
Our karateka:
Master Michael R. Yacub won third place and Miss Alice Tedja Sedjaja won ribbon II.
A huge congratulations to both Michael and Alice for a job well done. We are so very proud of your achievements..and from the sports Karate we are just amazed and truly honored.
March 20 In this new age of advanced technology, far away places becomes just a face away..what a great way to reach so many in so many far away places with ease. Time difference becomes insignificant when you will gain knowledge and new friends.

So today with The World Down Syndrome Day approaching and the world seem to celebrate it's special day, Mrs Aryanti Rosihan Yacub, founder of ISDI, a non-profit Down Syndrome Society of Indonesia became the special guest speaker for YIPABK, another non-profit organization focussing on people born with disabilities. The special theme was  the "The Beautiful Truth About Down Syndrome That Not Many People Know".

Mrs. Aryanti naturally spoke of her own experience and her journey raising her handsome and wholesome son, Michael now aged 33 years old and who has an IQ of 35, but defy the odds by achieving so many and various medals, trophies and his amazing hidden talents were discovered. This just showed that IQ does not define a person's ability and be a prison in it. Mrs. Aryanti has proven that the Sky is indeed the Limit when you believe and reach for it.

The listeners had gain so much as well as renewed confidence to keep going forward and not be constrained to just minial and limit the possibilities. Be gone the ego or shame...go for the sky...nothing is impossible.
March 21 D-Day!!!...The World Down Syndrome Day is here... celebrated the world over. All day long the medias: TVs, Instagrams, Tiktoks, FaceBooks, various events showing various talents, performances of  all kinds: sports, cooking, dances, music and musical performances. This just confirms that we have come a long way from the "dark ages" to such height of achievements in such a short time of 24 years since ISDI was founded.

Mrs. Ira Sekuntarwati McClendon, who has joined ISDI as it's communicator, was invited by DA AI TV, ISDI's best media supporter on raising awareness and on humanitarian causes. The topic was interesting: How important it is that World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated from year to year?

Mrs. Ira McClendon: It is very important for us to spread public awareness and inform the general public about the community of children born due to mental limitations or people with special needs or mental retardation.

Then the talk became more serious to topics such as the rights of people born with DS and the law protecting them over sexual abuse, bullying abuse and so forth.  We asked for the government to join hands with us to bring better life for young and adults DS so they can be better educated and therefore will enjoy their rights to jobs and life just like other people.
So far parents have created communities to accomodate the activities and some brilliant ideas to uplift their self esteem    by foccusing to improve their abilities and show case them with such pride.
The many government bodies which at times touched this subject have not been able to manage some success..Mrs. Ira seriously urged to remedy ASAP so the Down syndrome people in Indonesia can have a better life and future and accepted nationally
..gone will be the many negative stigmas..
The government must be willing to communicate with us and learn a lot from us to be able to make laws to protect them and provide all that they need to be productive people.
May 20 After a few years of taking exams online due to the covid pandemic period, finally we're allowed to do the exam offline at the private residence of Sensei Ivan at Pesona Kayangan Mungil 1 Housing Complex, Depok, West Java.

It was such a happy and reunion like atmosphere meeting and respecting all the senpais and senseis in the flesh...we can actually toss each other freely and in such friendly terms.

This exam is for the blue belt going to brown belt and some going from blue belt kyu..?.to blue belt kyu...?.

And this time the exam was with a twist, in that there was a best three winners to make the event more lively and more energetic for everyone involved. the three best winners were:
- 3rd place:  Maria Catriona.
- 2nd place:  Michael Rosihan Yacub.
- 1st place: Juan Allegran.

Everyone was so  proud of such achievements..especially the senpais and sensies..for they know how difficult it was to teach and to achieve to this level.
It was indeed a good Saturday...
Every karateka went home with a big smile on their faces....happy Saturday everyone!!!
June 11 Mrs Maisi A. Wiriadi and her precious daughter Intan Sartika Tasmaan who was born with Down syndrome 40 years ago, were invited to appear in DA AI TV a channel dedicated to humanitarian causes in Indonesia. DA AI TV was originated from Taiwan, Taipei under the belief of the goodness of Buddhism.

The program was Family Gathering with title My Special Child..where Intan was seen doing her favorit pastime of cooking for her loved ones. She really enjoyed her time in the kitchen...and she dressed herself as a chef...probably she has seen the TV channel of Master Chef Indonesia...which has become a favorit of everyone.

In the program she demoed making sandwhich..a favorit of her and her parents morning breakfast...

Miss Intan is very lucky in that her mom is a hands on person spending long hours educating Intan since a wee baby and sacrifising her own university education to dedicate her time for Intan. The result is awesome...
July 12 The year 2023 brought forth new programs and activities for our students at Center of Hope, such as various sports, paid jobs and social club activities which includes birthday celebrations and outings.

Our first outing activity this month was to visit the newly renovated National Museum at Medan Merdeka Road, Central Jakarta which has been improved with a more modern and attractive outlook to attract visitors and keeping with the modern times of education.

The highlight of our visit was experiencing the newly introduced exhibit called imersifA, a unique colourfull show that uses high technology in 3 D with  a 360° angle in surrounding walls equipped with fantastic sound system.

The exhibition displayed psychedelic images of Indonesian history, cultures, natures both on land and sea , which seems so real, make they turned to be more excited, playful and were left in awe.

Our visit ended with everyone smiling and feeling wonderful, this outing activity will certainly be one of our favorites.
July 16 MSI..Mitra Seni Indonesia, a group of mostly elderly ladies who are very into the Arts has annually hold various events promoting local cultures and products by local Artisans.
This year on the occasion of The Indonesian Children's Day...ISDI was invited to showcase our ability in performing the Arts..which in this special event we chose our renown bamboo musical instruments Angklung ISDI and our folklore (traditional) dance group.
The event called Seni & Bazaar  Festival 2023 was held in Kemang, South Jakarta.

Our Angklung played 3 songs:
1. Aku Anak Indonesia a song apt for the occasion.
2. Keroncong Kemayoran..an oldie and favorit of the elderly audiences.
3. Es Lilin..another oldie favorit.

Our folklore dancers performed Betawi Dance..which depicts the Betawi of years gone by.

The crowd and the special guests seem impressed by our students’ performance and the audience were busy taking and recording their action on stage..which made us very proud indeed..
Mission accomplished!!!.
This just showed that we are good and able and fantastic!!!
July 28 The steadfast warm relationship between ISDI and Wanita PERSAHI under the esteem leadership of Mrs. Santi Diansari Hargianto has currently become important due to the fact that Wanita PERSAHI, a well established and prestigious group of ladies lawyers and legal professions of Indonesia agenda of defending and fighting for the rights of all children with disabilities throughout Indonesia.

This time ISDI is supporting the event of Wanita PERSAHI for their inauguration of their newly appointed board members.
This important event was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Central Jakarta.
In this meeting the agenda also included the topic of Celebrating The National Children' Day in June...

17 strong team of ISDI's hip hop dancers  performed their best and dynamic hip-hop dance inviting everyone presents including GM Grand Hyatt Hotel, Mr. Robert Dallimore to dance along to the rock & roll beat of Elvis Presley's Jail House Rock.

The seriousness of the meeting suddenly turned hilarious and fun   with many jokes and laughter going around becoming a first in the history of meetings with dance as intermezzo making the delegates relax, more innovative and happy..and certainly unforgettable.

All of us members of ISDI go home with big smiles on our faces... knowing full well we had successfully accomplished our mission to entertain everyone in this event.

To showcase and elevate the importance of previously mentioned theme, the event was covered by various local TV stations and magazines, such as DAAI TV, Metro TV, Kompas TV and Travel Vaganza magazine.
August 26 What an honor and what a milestone for ISDI.
On this day , our First Lady of the Republic of Indonesia , Madame Iriana Joko Widodo, gave a speech marking the opening ceremony event which ISDI was a central part of our 78th Independence Day.
This was the biggest event attended by a mix of the deaf, blind & intellectually challenged.

The event was organized by Ikatan Istri Karyawan dan Karyawati (IKAWATI) of Kementerian Agraria dan Tata Ruang (ATR), Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP), and Wanita PERSAHI and was held at Thamrin 10 Food & Creative Park in Central Jakarta.

Performing  something different of our strong karateka as a first in Indonesia and our choreographed energetic dancers also a first in Indonesia performed their best to the 300 strong audience applouding and dancing along to the tune of Elvis Presley's Jail House Rock song , making the atmosphere very merry and full of energy.
Other disability schools also showcased their  amazing skills in music and folkdances.

Then when all the competions started, all at once, making it chaotic but full of fun.
There was eating crackers, cake decorating and others.
The cake decorating was sponsored and partnered with OXONE , a household appliance company.

The event surely was very exhausting for all of us, however all the tiredness were paid off by with the hustling and bustling atmosphere from all the music and dancing with the guests, accompanied with free flow of ice cream for everybody along with the abundant prizes for everyone to take home. It truly was a great and fun moment  for everyone involved.
September 13 Religion....we are a free country with a variety of religion:
Muslim, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and other beliefs.
In our Center of Hope ISDI religion is aplenty, so what better method of teaching than to visit and see the actual place of worship for each of those religion.

Today, our first stop is to see the temple of The God of Buddha at Vihara Hemadhiro Mettavati in West Jakarta. This place is also famous as a religious tourism destination because of its magnificent architecture with golden dragon shining at the vast staircase of entrance.

Warm greetings were exchanged and some students saw the monks for the first time and wearing the trademark of orange robes..something different and which will be imprinted in their minds.

As our culture dictates..we must always bring gift when visiting..so this also was no different. Our students brought offerings of basket of fruits for the altar, where Big Statue of Buddha placed , surrounding with many kinds of flowers.
Meanwhile the monk also taught them how to pray or give their respects to the Buddha  in a much simpler method that is easier for our students to follow. They were also shown how to give greetings in the Buddhist way...much to the interest of our students.

At the end of the ritual of paying respect or praying, we were led to a pond full of Koi fishes to be fed..which put a smile on the faces of our students.
A happy outing day today and education.
Stay tune for our next worship place...
October 10 On the 13th anniversary of Vihara Mudita Center in Sunter,  North Jakarta, ISDI performed something different a move of change for the sombre and correct ritual of Vihara/prayer temple. We gave a Hip Hop dance to the tune of Happy Birthday from the famous group Jamrud..to the amazement and joy of all attendees...huraaah to the daring young organization for change.
Everyone dance and feeling merry to the tune and occasion.

Photo call was next..with Suhu and all performers..and...not to be forgotten the cute Panda furry doll for everyone.

Happy 13th birthday Vihara Mudita Center...
Hope to entertain you again next year
October 14 Intan, Angelina and Angelica, students of ISDI found themselves as trainees in Kurabu Ramen, a Japanese Restaurant in Alam Sutera, South Tangerang, Banten.

Not only the girls get involved in the making of Sushi in the kitchen, but also they get to serve the food to diners.

What a feat it is for the girls. They feel encouraged and enjoy a the processes in the training.

Big appreciation to Mr. Budi Dharmadi as the owner of KURABU RAMEN for the acceptance and confidence in the three students of ISDI. All the best and success.
October 21 Japanese food is well known as well as well liked by Indonesian.
Bento is considered street food and very well liked and so practicle for food to go.

Today ISDI students: Marcellina Michelle M., Rainer A., Randy Ifyan H. and Hollyann N. McClendon participated in a workshop organized by Seribu Paras in preparing Japanese Bentos at Hours Cafe, Kelapa Gading.

The unique thing about this workshop is that all the participants involved are people with Down Syndrome.

Looking at their photos and happy faces, we could guessed the the workshop was a success. Their bentos must be delicious in taste and in decorative  look...and fun to make..
All the moms' cameras were clicking to document the event...and giving everyone the thump up
December 09 Have a merry holiday and stay safe.See you all next year..As always when we have fun..it's time to go...

About Us

ISDI (Ikatan Sindroma Down Indonesia or Indonesian Down syndrome Society) was formally established on 21 st April 1999. A non-profit support group of parents, medical professions, special-needs experts, teachers, and all of those who have deep concern.

We, as parents are very concerned of the future of children with Down syndrome in Indonesia especially when little is done to support them by the government or other non-profit organizations.

We so look forward towards a better future by sharing our experiences and supporting each other in our monthly gatherings. This way we gain knowledge and our children benefit from our experiences.
